To End All War: Oppenheimer and The Atomic Bomb

NBC News Studios

Narrative Sequences

The animated narrative sequences serve to delve into Oppenheimer's humanity and provide context where archival footage is lacking.

The Request

The science animations called for an understanding of atomic and nuclear physics. Each narrative required research on time, place, and the people involved. The art direction needed to complement a wide range of media spanning over a century.

The Request

The Request

We crafted a contemporary style inspired by the time period and imperfections of aged film to seamlessly weaves between the film's interviews, archived footage, and photography.

The Result

Production Process

To bring the surreal and tactile narrative sequence to life, we utilized a variety of assets and applications during the animation process.

Title Treatment

The title treatment punctuates the mixed media cold open and sets up the documentary’s pre-bomb era beginning with a reverse explosion.

Film Noir Exploration

A combination of contemporary graphic novels and film noir established this directions foundation. We envisioned presenting historical figures as silhouettes revealed by shifts in light source.

American Dust Exploration

This treatment utilizes imagery reminiscent of 1940's advertising, 'doomstown' tests, and archival footage to serve as visual metaphors that explore the concept of America before and after the atomic bomb.

Science Infographics

These animated infographics play an integral role by visually assisting the explanations of scientific principals.
