The newest TCM IDs from MAMMAL unfold as a series of self-contained vignettes, designed to evolve their rebrand while deepening its connection to defining film moments. Each piece centers on a distinct C, exploring its unique personality and movement through action-driven match cuts that bridge extremes. For example, shifting from melancholic, restrained scenes to moments that are overtly goofy and outlandish. Through refined rotoscoping, the Cs are embedded behind on-screen subjects, creating a more interactive experience that further integrates the brand into the films themselves. Distinct yet cohesive, the IDs collectively position TCM as something more than a network, but as a voice within cinema.
Splash
The Splash C is less a graphic and more a gesture, defined by its handmade fluidity and tactile sense of motion. Its watery form moves effortlessly between the chaos of Clash of the Titans flood and the elegance of Million Dollar Mermaid’s dive, binding spectacle and grace into a single, continuous expression.
DUO
Reflecting the match-cut theme, The Duo C collapses in on itself as it rotates through the motions of the films. It moves alongside the figures, unifying the melancholy fall in The Roaring Twenties with the offbeat charm of The Wizard of Oz’s Scarecrow.
Angle
The Angle C is defined by its sharpness and ability to fracture into smaller, directional forms that track with motion. It mirrors the precision of the sword in Robin Hood before resolving as a framing device that opens into the playful dance of Singin’ in the Rain, shifting between tension, collapse, and joy within a single continuous form.
Dots
The arching force of Ben-Hur’s catapult sequence is heightened with the use of the Dots C while aligning with the slapstick impact of the head knock in Bringing Up Baby. It functions simultaneously as a reflection of the cannonball shape language as well as a trajectory line that tracks the passage of action across scenes.
Fan
The Fan C mirrors arrows striking a central bullseye, tying into the theme of the archery sequence from Pride and Prejudice. Its radiating form extends that momentum, connecting seamlessly to the spear movements in King Kong. Across both, the sharp geometry of the C holds the composition together, translating aim, force, and impact into a single continuous visual language.
Shells
The synchronized, rhythmic animation of the Shells C reflects the upward cadence of hurdle jumping in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. It then fractures and disperses with ease, mirroring the playful looseness of the dance sequence in On the Town.
Creative Approach
Visually, we drew from the language of the TCM brand — a Technicolor-inspired palette that feels both archival and alive. Archival clips sit alongside a poetically pop art direction, balancing nostalgia with graphic intention. Through rotoscoping, the Cs are integrated directly into the filmic world, dissolving the boundary between graphic system and cinematic frame.
